United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC)
As the leading body charged with the safeguarding and promotion of human rights around the world, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) plays a crucial role in addressing violations of human rights and furthering accountability through a range of diplomatic mechanisms such as: adopting resolutions, monitoring ongoing situations in specific countries, or through the authorization of Commissions of Inquiry as well as fact-finding missions. Composed of 47 Member States, the UNHRC promotes the universal protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Through mechanisms like the Universal Periodic Review, the UNHRC frequently reviews and works to hold states accountable to their human rights obligations and support the development and continuation of international norms that advance equity and justice worldwide. Consequently, this year’s UNHRC committee will focus on peacekeeping operations in post-conflict states and the role of peacekeepers in those operations. Similarly, this committee will be tasked with how to navigate political corruption in post-colonial states to ensure the protection of civilian and individual rights.
