2020 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Fake news and hacking ruined Facebook’s reputation four years earlier. It is the job of Facebook’s leaders to navigate a similar, more spotlighted situation in the 2020 election campaigns.

CONSUMER RELATIONS

Users of Facebook have become more and more dissatisfied with many aspects of Facebook. With the rise of competitor social platforms, the leaders of Facebook need to make sure they do not lose profits.

PRIVACY

The direction of the use and trading of private information by Facebook, as well as the perception of the public about privacy, will be determined and influenced by the leaders of Facebook in this committee.

WAR ON THE EUROPEAN FRONT

The European Front is where this war started and where most of the fighting thus far has taken place. There are two European fronts for the Central powers, one in the west along the French-German border and one along the German-Austrian-Russian border in the east. Both fronts will need to be pressed for either of the powers to win.

WAR IN THE COLONIES

France, Great Britain, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire all have extensive holdings in Africa, Southern Asia, and the Pacific. Many of these nations depend on their colonial networks to fund and supply their war efforts. Whichever side of the conflict can control the flow of goods too and from the colonies could control the war.

DOMESTIC TROUBLES

The early 1900s were a period of internal upheaval as well as international conflict. Nations will need to be careful to monitor their internal parties, movements, and uprisings to make sure they don’t lose their countries while they’re trying to win the war.

THE VIETNAM WAR AND POWS

The Vietnam War has become increasingly costly and unpopular for the US. President Nixon has made it a priority to end this war, or US involvement in it.

FOREIGN INTERVENTION

In order to protect US National Security interests, this administration will need to actively participate in the affairs of other countries, either in public or clandestinely. Your job will be to figure out how to do this efficiently and in a way that will cause the least damage for the United States.

HISTORY OF UNREST

Neighboring civilizations have both hindered and helped the Persian Empire. Collisions between the Greek and Persian Empires began as early as 550 B.C. as both sought for expanded political and territorial control. As Alexander advances, King Darius and the council must evaluate individual and collective motives to determine who is friend and who is foe.

ALEXANDER THE GREAT

Upon succeeding his father King Philip II as King of Macedon in 336 B.C., Alexander the Great initiated an unprecedented imperial conquest. Strategic, intellectual, and ambitious, Alexander poses a significant threat to every surrounding civilization. Will Alexander be open to a diplomatic solution? As Alexander and his army cross the Hellespont, King Darius and his council must decide how to defend against Alexander’s expansion.

THE HOMEFRONT

As Alexander and his army cross the Hellespont, King Darius and his council must decide how to defend against Alexander’s expansion.

RECOVERING FROM AUSTERITY

From the early 1980s onward, Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu imposed stringent austerity policies on the public with the aims of improving industrial production and lessening financial dependence on the West. The programs were unsuccessful and resulted in food shortages, widespread electricity outages, and infrastructural decline. Now that Ceausescu has been deposed, how should the NSF go about improving Romania’s dire economic situation?

THE PRESENCE OF COMMUNIST BUREAUCRATS

The National Salvation Front inherits a government with thousands of Ceausescu appointed communist bureaucrats in Bucharest and elsewhere in Romania. Their ideology is diametrically opposed to the goals of the NSF, leaving their continued employment with the Romanian government in doubt. Should bureaucrats be legally penalized for their mismanagement of Romania? Should they be re-educated and kept within the civil service due to their expertise? How do we subvert opponents of the NSF while maintaining a functioning bureaucracy?

FOREIGN RELATIONS

The Socialist Republic of Romania was formally aligned with the USSR yet maintained cordial relations with the US and other Western powers well into the 1970s. The emergence of a new democratic front and the removal of Ceausescu’s regime leaves these alliances in question, and the changing geopolitical landscape of Eastern Europe threatens to undermine Romania’s special relationship with the US (as it had previously been one of the only powers in the Eastern Bloc to work with America). A reliance on Soviet goods and resources also must be recognized; how should the NSF proceed on the international stage?

THE NEW COLD WAR

The main theme of this committee will be proxy conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran, which can be traced back to the Iranian Revolution, when Iran undermined Saudi Arabia’s image as the leader of the Muslim world. Dubbed the “New Cold War,” this rivalry between the US backed Saudi Arabia and the Russian backed Iran has been waged on multiple levels over geopolitical, economic, and sectarian influence in pursuit of regional hegemony. The result has been various proxy wars throughout the region such as the ones in Syria and Yemen.

SYRIA

Beginning in 2011, the ongoing civil war in Syria has continued to be a hotly contested topic, with much attention being drawn to the power dynamic between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Syria is an important part of Iran’s sphere of influence and has been a major ally, leading to Iranian and even Russian support of the Syrian government and aid in targeting rebel groups. In response, Saudi Arabia has chosen to support the rebels in hopes of weakening Iran.

YEMEN

Unlike Syria, which has garnered much attention from the media in the US, the situation in Yemen has flown relatively under the radar; the power struggle between Saudi Arabia and Iran, however, remains the same. Yemen was an important part of Saudi Arabia’s sphere of influence, but a Houthi insurgency, supported by Iran, has led to full scale war as the coup was seen as an immediate threat to Saudi Arabia.

THE CLONE WARS

The Clone Wars Rage On! In the Year 20 BBY, The Republic and Separatists clash in a seemingly endless conflict. Members of the Galactic Senate conduct their usual meetings, now focused on a handful of specific tasks. First and foremost, senators are charged with finding an end to this war, whether through violence or diplomacy, and to determine both tactically and logistically how best to fight.

BOUNTY HUNTERS

However, this task has been complicated by the rise of crime in an increasingly war-torn galaxy, most notably the rise in prominence of bounty hunters. These rogue agents pose a great threat to the Republic as their crimes threaten to undermine the Republic from within. As such, the Senate is charged with finding some way to stop their menace.

THE INDEPENDENT SYSTEMS

Finally (though this charge may not reach the senate when all is said and done), the Senate is charged with finding a resolution to the issue of Independent Systems, those who would choose to remain separate from both sides of the conflict, most notably among them the system of Mandalore. The Senate must set their policy towards these systems and ensure that these policies are upheld. No member of the Senate wields a lightsaber or can use the force, but even still the weight of the galaxy rests on their shoulders....

PRESENTING THE FIRST REPUBLIC TO THE WORLD

Are we an independent nation or loyal subjects of Spain who do not want a French king on the Spanish throne? The newly formed Republic of Venezuela must establish its national identity and its loyalties. It remains unclear if the Republic remains loyal to the Spanish throne, or if it is an independent nation.

RENEGADE PROVINCES

The provinces of Maracaibo, Coro, and Guayan remain loyal to the Spanish throne. Their separation greatly weakens the Republic and must be addressed.

THE GOVERNMENTAL CONGRESS

The Republic of Venezuela faces the challenge of forming a system of governance. It has a diverse population, including a large number of enslaved individuals. This government must be able to address internal and external threats.
